There's one question I get that really grinds my gears. "Will I get injured from lifting weights?"

Actually, the opposite is true. Lifting weights that match your strength, ability, and flexibility, especially with a qualified coach, won't get you injured. Being weak, imbalanced, and inflexible will. :-)

The benefits of strength training are almost too many to count. Bone health, posture, blood sugar, hormone balance, and staying out of pain. One of the best things about getting stronger is being able to do everything you love without it hurting.

TWO THINGS A COMPLETE PROGRAM NEEDS

A good program covers all the essential movement patterns. Squat, lunge, hinge, push, pull, and carries. But there are a couple more pieces that make it complete and safe.

Unilateral exercises. That's a fancy way of saying single-arm and single-leg work. Almost everyone starts out with some imbalance, where one side is stronger than the other. Training one limb at a time helps resolve that over time.

Corrective exercise and joint mobilization. Once we spot a flawed movement pattern, just repeating it won't fix it. By working strategically on our weaknesses, we improve movement and range of motion, which makes the strength work more effective and safer.

Don't fall for the myth that weightlifting is dangerous. Dedicate yourself to getting stronger. It's the best thing you can do for your health.

Strong is safe. Weak is what's risky.
