We all make promises to ourselves. Let's stop breaking them.
There's some tough love in here today, and it's for me just as much as it's for you.
I've decided my professional life is about helping people live happier, healthier lives through safe, sustainable exercise and better lifestyle choices. Well, I recently came across a list of people who'd reached out to me with questions about my program. And guess what? I didn't follow up, or I took way too long to respond.
A WAKE-UP CALL FROM MY OWN COACH
This came up at a meeting with my own coaches. That's right, coaches need coaching too. There was a guest coach there who works with high earners on prioritizing their health. Here's what she said, not just to me but to several coaches in the room who were also dropping the ball on follow-up.
"This person reached out because they needed your help. If you don't follow up, you're doing them a disservice. You're basically telling them to go to the inferior gym down the road, get injured, and get mediocre results, because you were too busy to call them back."
Then she said, "If you operate with integrity and you don't follow up, then you're a liar." Ouch.
Stop breaking promises. Stop disappointing yourself. When you start keeping promises to yourself, the change in your life will be immeasurable.
MAKE A PROMISE, NOT A DECISION
So if you decided to strength train three times a week and you're not, it's time to try something different. Same with drinking less, sleeping earlier, or eating lean protein and veggies with every meal.
Get out a pen and paper, or your notes app. Rewrite what you've decided and phrase it as, "I promise myself I will ____." When you make a promise and you operate with integrity, it gets a lot harder to break.
Let's all stop disappointing ourselves, me included. Make a promise instead of a decision, and don't break it.
